Make-A-Wish Foundation

As many as four local children may be eligible for  wish granting soon, but three of the children have already qualified and are waiting for the effects of the pandemic to “settle down” before they make use of their wish: A trip to Disney World.

Montrose resident wish-granter Sherilyn Cook is now organizing the first meeting for new volunteers at the Cobble Creek clubhouse on July 26. She hopes to recruit at least 30 volunteers with a passion for helping grant wishes.

Anyone interested in becoming a wish-granter volunteer can contact the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Colorado, fill out an interest form online or attend the July 26 meeting for new volunteers.

Museum of the Mountain West

The Museum of the Mountain West says their visitation has increased threefold this year, so they need plenty of help at the moment. For anyone with landscaping or carpentry skills, they could use help for some specific jobs. And for anyone else, you can come in and learn to be a tour guide for the museum. Call the museum at (970) 240-3400 and talk to the director, Richard Fike, to learn more and get set up.

Ute Indian Museum

The Ute Indian Museum accepts some all-around volunteers, meaning the position can be tailored to your interests. If you want to work in the garden, in the library, with the educational director or even in the gift shop, you can call (970) 249-3098 and ask to talk to the director. Alternatively, you can walk right into the museum and do the same.

Second Chance Animal Shelter

To volunteer with Second Chance, you can fill out their application, then you’ll participate in their orientation to teach you how to work with the animals.

Once a volunteer, you’re able to float around and switch up your days. You can walk some dogs one day if you’d like, or cuddle some cats the next day. Or, if for some reason you’d just like to do some yard work for the shelter, that’s another option too.
