The League of Women Voters of the Uncompahgre Valley and the Uncompahgre Valley Education Association (UVEA) are co-sponsoring a candidate forum for the Montrose County Board of Education. The forum will be held Monday, October 18, 2021, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Ute Indian Museum, 17253 Chipeta Road, Montrose, CO. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Masks are recommended.
Linda Gann (League member) will moderate the forum. Questions will be taken from the audience.
Candidates include: District A – Jeff Bachman, District C – Andrew Neal and Alice Murphy, District E – Cortney Loyd and Sarah Fishering, District F – Dawn Schieldt and Eric Kelley, and District G – Stephen Bush.

The League of Women Voters of the Uncompahgre Valley serves Delta, Montrose, and Ouray counties, and is dedicated to educating and empowering voters. As September 28 is National Voter Registration Day, the League will distribute information on how to register to vote, or to change or update voters’ information - important as ballots are mailed in Colorado to the address on file.
The League will distribute their Ballot Issue pamphlets closer to Election Day, with information on the three statewide ballot issues. The League will present this information at the Montrose Forum on October 13th, at 8 am in CMU’s Cascade room.
Our website will post information on local races and ballot issues as well as other presentations in our three-county service area. The League supports VOTE411.org, with loads of information on races, voting locations, important dates and other information, as well as voter registration and information updates, nationwide. More than 6 million voters accessed voter information in 2020 through VOTE411.org.

What Does It Take to Make Ends Meet in Western Colorado? The Self-Sufficiency Standard calculates how much income families of various compositions need to make ends meet without public or private assistance, depending on where they live. How do wages compare to what is needed? What can be done to help people become more self-sufficient?
The League of Women Voters for Montrose County (also serving Delta and Ouray Counties) is hosting a webinar entitled, “The Self-Sufficiency Standard in Western Colorado” on April 8, 2021 beginning at noon. Bruce Barnum from the Colorado Center on Law and Policy (CCLP) will present a one-hour webinar on the self-sufficiency standard, focusing on Montrose, Delta, and Ouray counties. Drawing on the CCLP's publications, The Self-Sufficiency Standard for Colorado and the State of Working Colorado, Mr. Barnum will discuss how issues such as affordable housing impact the residents of western Colorado. Prepared every few years for Colorado Center on Law and Policy by the Center for Women’s Welfare at the University of Washington, the Self-Sufficiency Standard calculates how much income a family must earn to meet basic needs such as housing, child care, food and transportation costs without public or private assistance based on family composition in each of Colorado’s counties. The League of Women Voters for Montrose County sponsored this webinar, on March 18, 2021. It was a panel discussion with local law enforcement and mental health professionals who described their partnership using a co-response model, where law enforcement and crisis counselors respond together to emergency situations involving persons dealing with mental health crises. Our panel of experts included Tim Cox, Patrol Commander with the Montrose Police Department; Ty Cox, Lieutenant with the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office; Laura Byard, licensed professional counselor and Regional Director from The Center for Mental Health for Montrose, Ouray, and San Miguel counties; and Katharyn Burke, licensed professional counselor and co-responder for Montrose, also with The Center for Mental Health (CMH). All our panelists are directly involved in the co-response program, but because they work for different agencies with different responsibilities and service areas, their answers provided a good understanding of how this co-response model works for Montrose County. The CMH also partners with Delta County law enforcement to provide similar co-response services.
